Composing My Third Symphony

Posted: June 12, 2015 in Press

Closing out the 2nd quarter of 2015, I’ve graduated from UMKC with my master of music degree in music composition. My third symphony, Symphony No. 2 is well under way. It’s ironic that I’ve completed Symphony No. 1 (Empire of Kasuf) and Symphony No. 3 (Captain Paul Cuffe and the Traveller) before Symphony No. 2. This work began in 2002, along with Symphony No. 1, but Symphony No. 3 seemed to write itself. Before I knew it, I had completed both symphonies while still developing thematic material for the 2nd. I’m currently writing the final movement, and it’s the largest and longest work I’ve written so far. It exceeds 60 minutes, and it speaks well! Symphony No. 1 (Empire of Kasuf), and Escape from the Evil Empire are close runner-ups in terms of the number of musicians, as far as length, they don’t come near.

I set out to write an epic work that will be performed someday, can stand on its own, and represent both me and the culture to which it is dedicated. I haven’t a clue as to when it will be programmed or performed. It’s too large a work to receive a reading. I fell quite confident with it thus far. The editing process won’t begin until late fall 2015, which will be a few months after I’ve completed this magnum opus. I like to take time away from the music whenever I complete a lengthy work.

The instrumentation calls for orchestra with chorus (SATB), 5 percussionists, a modest brass section and auxiliary instruments inspired by the work of Maurice Jarre.

That’s all for now folks, but I have been in the recording studio producing, arranging, and engineering. There’s more come concerning that. Stay Tuned!!!!
